Developing Tomorrow’s Leaders: Seal the Deal 2017
In today’s society, so many of our youth are not reaching their potential. Why is this? What factors withold young adults from reaching their full potential? Commonly, it’s the inability to cope with some form of childhood trauma. Fight For Life Foundation gives young adults the tools they need to combat this trauma and reach their full potential. One of the ways we do this is through our Seal the Deal Youth Football camp.
Seal the Deal is a youth flag football camp and tournament that utilizes sports-related activities as teaching agents to help students “make big plays on and off the field,” helping them develop the Social and Emotional qualities needed to become healthy productive adults.
Seal the Deal is not just a football camp – it’s also a leadership development program that uses social emotional learning (SEL).
What is SEL?
Social and emotional learning is the process through which people acquire and apply the knowledge and skills necessary to manage emotions, effectively communicate, set and achieve goals, feel empathy for others, establish and maintain relationships, and make good decisions.
Improved development of Social and Emotional skills is known to lead to:
- Better academic performance
- Higher graduation and college attendance rates
- Better mental and physical health
- Lower violent crime rates
Who does Seal the Deal serve?
Seal the Deal Football Camp serves campers who are in 3rd-8th grade as well as camp counselors who are in 10th-12th grade. Counselors must go through a 6-week training program where they focus on personal development, leadership development, and camp preparation. They learn how to use both self-reflection and group dialogue to understand what leadership is at it’s core. They then take these skills into camp with them and focus on developing our campers.
Campers not only go through football skills and drills, but they also learn character development like discipline and goal-setting, teamwork, and conflict resolution. All of the leadership and wellness development for both campers and counselors culminates in a flag football tournament with the winning teams having the opportunity to play at the Colts Football practice facility!
Not only does Seal the Deal produce short-term benefits like self-management, self-awareness, and responsible decision making, but it also produces long-term benefits like an 11% increase in test scores for young adults who go through our SEL programs. In fact, every $1 invested in SEL programs produces $11 in benefits! These benefits can translate into reduced mental healthcare costs, higher high school and college graduation rates, and a lesser strain on the legal and school systems.
We expect our Seal the Deal campers and counselors to not only grow physically, but also grow and be challenged mentally so that they come out of camp knowing that they can Dream, Believe, and Achieve anything they set their minds to!
