Build A Better You Challenge: Teamwork

This year, Fight For Life is excited to continue it’s “Build A Better You Challenge” that incorporates our Building Dreams program with Jack and Jill Magazine! In this series, Marlin Jackson sets out the building blocks that students need in order to live the life they want. As someone who grew up in humble circumstances and was able to overcome a broken home and drug-fueled neighborhood, Marlin knows all about what it takes to fight for a better life.

In the fourth issue of 2019, Marlin teaches readers about the importance of Teamwork. In this lesson, Sarah, Matt, and Megan are making a poster that shows the cover of their favorite book. The school will vote on the best book cover poster, and the winners get to have lunch with the principal, Mr. Jones. Sarah is taking art lessons, so she will draw the pictures. Matt volunteers to write the title and author. Megan loves painting, so the group decides she should paint the drawings when Sarah finishes. Each student in the group took on a job for the poster. And their teamwork paid off! The group won the contest and enjoyed a delicious pizza lunch with Mr. Jones.

Marlin teaches in this lesson 4 tips on Teamwork. They are: 1. – Be patient with your teammates. Everyone has a different skill level, so try not to rush others when they’re practicing a skill you’ve already mastered 2. – Help each other get pumped up. Before a big game or a scary performance, huddle up and talk about how hard you worked and how it’s time to shine as a team. 3. – Never blame others. If your teammate drops the ball at the end of the game and you lose, don’t make him or her feel bad about it. We all make mistakes, and you’re bound to make one as well sooner or later if you haven’t already. 4. – Do your fair share. If you’re working on a group project for class, make sure you’re doing as much as everyone else. If someone else is slacking, speak to them about it politely and explain why it’s not fair to you and the others.

We’re asking our readers: 1. What does Teamwork mean to you? 2. How do you show Teamwork at home, in school, or in your community?

All participants will receive a signed picture of Marlin Jackson.
