Fundamentals: Our Mission
- Foundation and Program Info
Our goal is simple: help underserved youth fight for a better life.
Today, a majority of students in the U.S. who live in low-income urban and rural school districts are underperforming. No exception to this is the Indianapolis Public School district (IPS):
- 58% of IPS students graduate from high school on time
- 37% of black males graduate from IPS
Not only are these students underperforming, they’re also going on to become statistics in crime. The rate of violent crime is highest in geographical regions served by the IPS school system:
- Unemployment rate is 3x higher
- Poverty rate is 4x higher
- Crime rate is 6x higher
What causes these rising statistics in crime and lack of proper education? The answer lies in the type of environment that children are growing up in. 70% of families with unmarried parents are poor families, while 73% of families with married parents are non-poor. Additionally, children who grow up in single-parent homes are less likely to complete high school and go on to college, while children who grow up in homes with married parents are not only completing high school, but college as well.
The overarching goal of the Fight For Life Foundation is to develop within underserved youth the social and emotional capabilities needed to build healthy families, communities, and contribute to society in a positive way.
We do this by partnering with school systems and summer programs to teach literacy and support social and emotional learning in order to positvely affect the way students feel, think, and act. We incorporate Social Emotional Learning (SEL) into each of our programs in order to give students the tools that they are missing from growing up in an environment where they do not receive this type of guidance.
Social and emotional learning is the process through which people acquire and apply the knowledge and skills necessary to manage emotions, effectively communicate, set and achieve goals, feel empathy for others, establish and maintain relationships, and make good decisions.
To put it simply: we help underserved youth fight for a better life– helping them to realize that they too can Dream, Believe, and Achieve!
