The Impact of First Downs & Extra Points

Our Building Dreams software as a service is expansive; it is packed full of features based off of education models that are commonly used: MTSS (Multi-tiered System of Supports), SEL (Social-emotional Learning), and PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports).

One of our PBIS tools includes the ability for teachers and students to document and reinforce positive behavior through a gamified system. By using football terms like “First Downs” and “Extra Points,” students are able to get excited about participating in prosocial and safe interactions with their peers and teachers at school.

When teachers see their students displaying behavior that is aligned with Building Dreams and/or their school’s Core Values, they’re able to reward students with First Downs that move students closer to earning an incentive, such as a Building Dreams fidget spinner or water bottle. For example, if students show up to class on time and aren’t tardy, they can receive a First Down for Getting to class on time.

Extra Points are a great way to get students involved in noticing positive behavior in their peers. Extra Points can be given by school staff for students going above and beyond expectations. For example, if a school counselor sees a student include their classmate in a game of tag at recess, they can give a student an Extra Point for Teamwork. Our students love rewarding their friends for behavior as well!

One of the best parts of our PBIS tools is parent and guardian access! Parents can see their students’ positive behavior in real time which then allows them to reinforce that positive behavior at home!
